Corporate Services Department is responsible for the annual preparation and publication of the South Dublin County Council Register of Electors.
The process begins in July with house-to-house enquiries for the purpose of preparing a Draft Register. The Draft Register is published on the 1st November and members of the public have an opportunity to submit a claim for ammendment to the Draft. All claims must go through a statutory process before being incorporated into the final Register. A new Register comes into force on the 15th February each year and is used at any election and/or referendum held in the following 12 months.
In order to vote at an election or referendum, a person's name must be listed on the Register of Electors for the locality in which the elector is ordinarily resident. Every resident aged 18 and upwards is entitled to be on the Register.
The statutory provisions relating to the registration process are contained primarily in Part II of, and the Second Schedule to, the Electoral Act 1992. However, amendments to registration rules and procedures have been enacted in further legislation.
